Review of The Sugarland Express (1974) by Rob L — 31 Aug 2012
Not terrible for a debut film, but that's the best one can muster as a compliment. Character studies are often tricky work, especially when coupled with societal commentary. However, the piece never rises above spectacle, a problem in most Spielberg films.
He is too overcome with the sight of police cars run amok and as a result forgets about his characters, thereby coming off as cold and emotionless. The heart of the film should be in the characters, and he spends too little time with their interactions.
Spielberg also seems to have trouble finding and settling on a tone. Redneck comedy? Road movie? Societal satire? Screwball action? Thank goodness Jaws was only a few years away.
