Review of The Sugarland Express (1974) by Brian K — 27 Oct 2010
At times you wonder if this story is either amazingly comedic, desperately sad or even if it really is true. The protagonists within the narrative just can't be that dumb, clueless or real right? That question resonates throughout.
To me this speaks to a great script, good acting and the establishment of one of the great directors. Within the film you see all the flashes that Spielberg is really talented. The work he accomplishes with his DP with the camera is fantastic and the editing is superb.
You even begin to see traits of postmodernism seeping through, like the use of other media and a self reflexivity to the film. The lasting impact of the fill is the foreshadowing it portrays into what our society would become.
Throughout the film people pine to be famous, to be on TV. Criminality is celebrated, even lauded by not only the characters in the film but their internal audience within the film but also us, it's external audience.
The rise of a reality centered television plays a role within the films narrative. This is amazing. Hell, the movie is one broadcast car chase! If you are an aspiring filmmaker this is a must see.
