Review of The Stunt Man (1980) by Eli P — 03 Jul 2007
Richard Rush's mobius strip of a film gives O'Toole one of his greatest roles as the mephistophelean director Eli Cross, who may or may not be making a WW1 film in which escaped con Railsback is the replacement stuntman destined to suffer the same (deadly) fate as his predecessor.
A true "cult" film, in that it's utterly unclassifiable--alternately comedic, suspenseful, and just plain enigmatically bizarre for its own sake--imagine "The Bad And The Beautiful" as conceived by Alejandro Jodorowsky.
As a veteran of a few film sets, I can say that as an expose of the moviemaking process, it's more accurate than most would care to admit...
