Review of The Strangers (1998) by Skyler I — 28 Jul 2011
The Strangers was halfway decent, but it was far too boring and got on my nerves all too often. Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman are decent together when playing a couple, but some of their dialogue can be plain dumb.
For a horror film that tries to extract scares from the audience using suspense and Hitchhockian thrills, you'd think it would have been scarier, but no, it wasn't. The story was thin to begin with, but when it's pushed aside altogether to make room for chase scenes and attempted murders, well, that's just not good writing.
The Strangers themselves are also uninteresting. Their choice of disguises evoke laughter from the audience as oppossed to the creepiness the director was clearly hoping for. At least the film was effective in crafting characters whom the audience genuinely cares for, and does not want to see harm befall them.
They do though, and the killers responsible for invoking such pains' reasons for doing so will do nothing but piss you off.
