Review of The Strangers (1998) by Brandon O — 28 Feb 2013
For a horror film this is superbly directed and visually reminiscent of suspenseful genre classics like "Halloween". I was initially frightened by the film because such care is taken to show us inside the lives of these characters and gives us a reason to genuinely care about any unpleasantness awaiting them.
This falls away, however, after they begin behaving like morons and taking less and less care to protect themselves. Despite it's faults I still enjoyed the film as it's in the select company (along with some terrific Ti West pictures) of modern horror films which utilize great suspense through minimalism.
