Review of The Stoning of Soraya M. (2009) by Nicholas C — 01 Jul 2009
Viewers get stoned to death with slow moving, heavy handed and melodramatic scenes of one dimensional characters and cartoonish acting not to mention numerous messages of religious fundamentalism, militant Islam, mob crowd mentality, and women's rights. The stoning scene re-calls the "historical torture porn" so memorable from "The Passion of Christ.".
Interesting tidbit: "Stoning" was the runner up to the audience award at Toronto Film Festival last year losing to a little film called "Slumdog Millionaire," (winning the award that launched the movie into art house theaters.) Not much of a competition at that festival.
