Review of The Stoning of Soraya M. (2009) by Rachel M — 10 Jul 2011
While watching this movie, I always felt like there was something missing, as if they were tripping over the story as a mere exercise to justify the grisly end. This is an explosive social topic, but they hardly scratched the surface of that topic - how does a society reach that level of inhumanity? What makes two young boys willingly participate in the killing of their own mother? While it was moving in many ways, I give this film a fairly low rating for being a horror flick in disguise.
It excels in shock value but falls far short on character development and social education.
