Review of The Stoning of Soraya M. (2009) by Kathryn M — 24 Aug 2011
Ouch.
This movie was a great example how religion, politics, and power can be twisted and manipulated in some of the most awful ways.
This not a nice, clean movie. It is clear from the beginning where it was going, the manipulation evident. And the "R" rating comes from ONE scene... an absolutely brutal, horrifying scene. As much as it is the story of Soraya and her death, it is also the story of the courage of her aunt every step of the way (in protecting her niece, speaking out, and telling the story), especially against the culture that had developed in that village.
This is not a movie for people who like light movies with a happy ending. This is a movie for people who like to be challenged and can handle some truly rough moments and realities.
