Review of The Stoning of Soraya M. (2009) by Cmc S — 08 Jan 2012
This is not a movie for the faint of heart. It is, however, a movie that bears the horrors of life in much of the world where Shari'a is the law of the land. Having researched this issue in law school, I can assure you that this is an accurate portrayal - and worse.
Shoreh Aghdashloo, as Zahra, put in her most amazing performance - she would have won the Acadmy Award, had she been nominated. Mozhan Marno, as Soraya, also gives a stellar performance, as well as Navid Negahban, who plays the morally bankrupt Ali.
The music is haunting, the cinematography terrific with sweeping scenes of a landscape as arid as the tale itself. Every woman should see this film.
