Review of The Sting (1973) by Azle E — 13 Sep 2010
With "The Sting", director George Roy Hill and stars Robert Redford and Paul Newman managed to recapture the magic they had spun four years earlier in "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid".
No easy task, that, but they delivered. David Ward's clever script is perpetually entertaining, and Newman and Redford make the most of every line he wrote for them. Not to be outdone is costar Robert Shaw as a vicious Irishman whose millions of dollars make a big target for Newman and Redford's intricate con game.
Henry Bumstead's nostalgiac production design and Edith Head's perfectly tailored costumes form a glorious evocation of 1930s Chicago. The whole movie is one slick production, and an awful lot of fun.
