Review of The Squid and the Whale (2005) by Alysia V — 15 Jul 2009
I really, really enjoyed Jeff Daniels in this even though, overall, his character was sort of a snobbish, intellectual jerk. I liked seeing him in this sort of role and thought he played it very, very well.
A pretty depressing, awkward and different vibe to this movie and though it's certainly one worth seeing once I'm not sure how I'd feel about watching it again. Like I said, it was just so awkward with the father crushing on some 20 year old student and counseling his elder son to date as many hot women as possible, then Linney's character who I want to like and want to feel like is the victim of this divorce yet making that very difficult when she's getting sexually involved in multiple affairs.
..and with that dense tennis jock none the less. Then you've got the two very dysfunctional boys in this film, the older one becoming the spitting image of his father which is a pretty scary thing and then the younger who does nothing but drink beer and spread his semen in various public places.
..Yeah. Did I mention that this movie is pretty akward? I can definitely say it's unlike any other film I've seen...I've just yet to determine whether that's a good or bad thing.
