Review of The Squid and the Whale (2005) by Taylor B — 25 Jan 2010
40% purely for being less than 90 minutes long.
Based on the real life experiences of Noah Baumbach during the mid 1980's when his family became fragmented by his parents separation.
I have such a hard time understanding why this movie was as critically acclaimed as it was. It baffles me. A cautionary tale for "intellectuals"?... That while they might be "book smart" they can really lack in what it takes to be good people, good parents?... I do not know. Divorce is ugly? It might adversely affect the development of children? OK... but as a child of divorced parents, I take offense! I've never been this BORING in my whole life! lol :).
All kidding aside,... I do not get it. I have nothing but the highest respect for Laura Linney and Jeff Daniels and even Jesse Eisenberg is talented. But wow. This movie is less than 90 minutes long yet felt like it took forever to go NOWHERE.
And I do love dysfunction onscreen... not in my actual house, true enough. But defnitely onscreen. :) But my God, entertain me please.
