Review of The Squid and the Whale (2005) by Raelene L — 22 Mar 2010
It was good. jeff daniels is great and it's worth seeing the movie for his performance alone. but I still don't like the ending. it's not that it puts too neat a bow on things, because it doesn't.
everything's still screwed up and awful and frank's a mess and walt's just starting to cope. so he goes to the squid/whale exhibit because it represents his parents and he's finally able to confront what scares him.
and the stupid soundtrack comes back on and we cut to the title card again so in case you didn't get that it was a metaphor, there you go. in real life there aren't metaphors like that. there aren't museums to go to that represent your life perfectly when you're going through a tough time.
more often you get that moment of acceptance just staring at your shoes or touching dad's hand in the hospital. it was over when walt realized he could cry about it. it's rough and it feels like a sketch of the movie baumbach wanted to make, but it's good.
don't let me down, ben stiller.
