Review of The Squid and the Whale (2005) by Cory W — 22 Jul 2010
Noah Baumbach has a style of film making that is hard to enjoy. He slaps the viewer in the face for whatever the run time with cold, unabashed realism. "The Squid and the Whale" is probably the most affecting Hollywood drama I've seen in years.
This movie shows the true pains of divorce through the eyes of the two children having to go through it. Being one who has been in the same situation, I could easily relate to the characters (well, maybe the older one).
At times, this movie can get a little too real. Baumbach will take your emotions and throw them at you in rapid fashion. The whole cast really does work well with the material, especially Jeff Daniels and Jesse Eisenberg.
I think that this film is not for the faint of heart because Baumbach is an acquired taste. Many will not really enjoy what he has to offer (Phillipines), but for those who don't mind a shot of realism every once and a while, this can be an unexpected gem.
Overall, "The Squid and the Whale" is a soberingly real drama that hosts some great performances and cutting themes.
