Review of The Squid and the Whale (2005) by Davey M — 12 Apr 2012
... I'm not entirely sure what people see in this movie. I must have missed it, somehow. The characters and their situation wasn't particularly original, but it was played out just well enough to keep my interest.
That is, until the movie's characters (I think in attempt to be funny) just became disgusting and basically despicable. Normally, this would not bother me, but the story and the way this film progressed just could not keep up with the way that the characters continuously digressed.
The further into the movie I watched, the less believable each character became, and the movie began to lose it's appeal. Then the oldest son decides that the family's situation is all neatly wrapped up in this metaphor of the squid and the whale, while everyone in the movie is going mental.
It all came out feeling quite meaningless and made me feel apathetic towards all of the characters. There were some funny moments and clever lines featured, but it's hard for me to find much value in this movie.
