Review of The Squid and the Whale (2005) by Scott C — 14 Aug 2009
Piercingly honest and vulgar. A little more painful to watch, and little less uplifting towards the end than I had expected. I'm quickly becoming an avid fan of Jeff Daniels, albeit a little late, and I have always loved Linney and Eisenberg. The little brother in this (Owen Kline) was terrifyingly fucked up....seriously, I'm not sure if it was a good idea for me, someone who doesn't have kids, to watch this movie because I am well horrified by how severely these parents screwed their kids up and how easy it was for them to do so.
Anna Paquin...though she is perfect in True Blood and I love her there, this makes the 2nd movie where she plays a salacious co-ed who seduces her college professor resulting in an emotional mess......and that is disturbing.
The story is a common one, the close-up, high-definition, no holds barred point of view is not.
