Review of The Squid and the Whale (2005) by Daniel Q — 27 Jun 2010
Realistic and honest. The acting is superb and I was impressed with Jeff Daniels, did not realize he was such a good actor. I'm a big Wes Anderson fan, the producer in this one, however, this is not a Wes Anderson film by any means.
It's allot darker and even though funny at times it wasn't as apealing as a Wes Anderson film. I loved the title, also, the character study was incredible. The younger son siding with the mom and the eldest siding with the dad, mainly because the mom cheated, was great.
Towards the end you see how both realize that the person they are siding with carries as much blame. The reason I don't give this movie a better rating, is it's lack of appeal. It was very painfull to watch at times, especially the scene with the little kid leaving .
... on the books/locker, that was disturbing/disgusting. I understand why they included the little kids puberty problems in the movie and I think it is relevent, however, they could have made their point in a different way.
