Review of The Squid and the Whale (2005) by Paige A — 11 Nov 2010
Ahh, ambiguity. Till the Squid and the Whale, I never knew thee.
Characters: Easy to comprehend, difficult to feel compassion for. Each of them have their own distastefulness. The father, although cheated on and broke, tends to be hard and unforgiving. You almost feel more for the mother, although you are conflicted by the fact that it is her fault that the family split up after engaging in multiple, long running affairs. You try and feel for the older son, but are turned off by his snottiness concerning women as a result of his father's influence over him. The young son is neutral.
Cool soundtrack, it seems. I'm not much into it but for those who enjoy softer, more independent type of songs, it is decent. "Hey You", one of the better Pink Floyd songs, is utilized multiple times throughout the film.
Exemplary portrayal of the effects a divorce may have on a family, on human actions, and on behavior.
