Review of The Squid and the Whale (2005) by Austin D — 04 Jun 2012
Noah Baumbach's brilliant study of a family going through a separation brings out the true realization of a person's thoughts and actions when dealing with that, and the yearning for comfort and forgiveness within the harshness of ourselves that has hurt those in a emotional situation.
The story is semi-autobiographical to Noah Baumbach's own childhood in dealing with the close and hard emotions in his family, and he tells it out of a true heart. The cast is absolutely profound, from Jeff Daniels, Jesse Esienberg, Laura Linney, and Owen Kline all express their coping with the emotional wounds that are mixed with their daily lives in such hard, pretty disgusting, and funny ways that just brings out the true compelling character studies of the family.
Definitely see this movie, one of the greatest dramas of all time!
