Review of The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) by Kevin G — 13 May 2013
I will start off by joining the choir to say that cliff jump makes for one of the greatest opening sequences in movie history. Jaws, in this movie at least, is the Best Bond henchman. This really was the only Moore movie where I didn't groan at most of the one-liners.
My two favourite Moore quips reside in this movie. ("When one is in Egypt, one should delve deeply into its treasures", and my favourite closing line: "Keeping the British end up, sir.").
However, as entertaining this movie is, there are times it falls prey to the absurdity of the Moore era. Though the train fight with Jaws is a nice compliment to the Bond-Grant fight in Russia, XXX is the best female ass kicker Bond has worked with.
And what were they thinking with that score; it's a good thing "Nobody Does it Better" has such a beautiful and strong melody that it makes up for the disco deficiencies of Marvin Hamlisch's music.
