Review of The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (2015) by Leon B — 23 Oct 2015
Review:
I really should have stayed away from this movie because I didn't like the first one but I thought I would give it a chance because the animated characters go to earth. What a mistake! Anyway, this film sees SpongeBob Squarepants and his nemesis Plankton, searching for the secret recipe for Bikini Bottoms favourite burger, the Krabby Patty, which was stolen by the Burger Beard (Antonio Banderas). With the help of a magic dolphin, SpongeBob follows his nose and ends up on earth with his friends, we're they have to fight the Burger Beard for the secret recipe. That's the main concept but there are some other elements, like there ridiculous superpowers, which you have to watch the film to understand. Personally I lost interest from the get go but it picked up when they reached earth. I was impressed with the CGI but the animation part of the film was pretty poor. I know that it as made for kids so I can't slate the storyline too much, so I'll just say that I really didn't enjoy it. The silly noises that the characters make, got on my nerves and whole stupidity of the characters in Bikini Bottom, made me cringe. On the plus side, I liked the music during the end credits and the little jig that the characters were doing but thats about it. Antonio Banderas was also impressive because he really did give his silly character his all so my hat goes off to him. I'm surprised that the movie made so much money at the box office because it's quite hard to follow, from a kids point of view and I didn't know what the characters were talking about most of the time. Anyway, if you want to keep the kids quiet for an hour and a half, then it's worth a purchase but apart from that, I didn't really like it. Disappointing!
Round-Up:
This movie was directed by Mike Mitchell who also brought you Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, Shrek Forever After, Sky High and Alvin and the Chipmunks. It was also directed by Mike Tibbitt who has only done work for the SpongeBob franchise. .
Budget: $74million.
Worldwide Gross: $312million.
I recommend this movie to people who are into their animation/adventure/comedy starring Antonio Banderas and voiced by Tom Kenny etc. 2/10.
