Well that was weird. The second SpongeBob movie to be made, it is a good cinematic standout for the franchise that got run down into mediocrity after it's fourth season. As a SpongeBob fan, I really enjoyed this movie, while not as much as the previous one.
The first one had a really great emotional core that this one lacks. However, it makes up for it in hilarious jokes and mind-bending action scenes. The characters are all still great, and many jokes in this movie made me laugh, and I say that without shame.
It does feel like those old classic SpongeBob episodes while adding its own spin to it. There is never any of that stupid gross-out humor seen in the later seasons. It is emotionally hollow, and does at times feel like an acid trip.
This never bothered me though, and the last act is very creative. The hand-drawn animation as well as the CGI was all great. Antonio Banderas's storyline in this movie is pointless, and adds nothing but a cool action scene at the end.
Overall I really enjoyed this movie, but I can probably only recommend this to SpongeBob fans. 8/10.
