Review of The Spirit (1987) by Dustin K — 07 Sep 2012
Frank Miller should just stick to comic books. This film just doesn't work in any way shape or form.
Bad acting and dialogue plus slapstick and other extremely silly sequences really are a distraction for this adaptation that doesn't even stay true to the source material.
Sam Jackson just overacts and doesn't have a care in the world. His character dresses in so many costumes, it's just ridiculous. Maybe Sam was bored and dressed up in different costumes just to amuse himself. The whole running gag where his character just hate eggs is just respective and obnoxious. What is the deal? Did people threw eggs on him when he was a kid? What? He's just a terrible villain.
The Spirit breaking the fourth wall is just ridiculous.
Frank Miller was trying to do what he did on Sin City, on that film he had Robert Rodriguez co-directing with him. Maybe if they both directed this film, it probably would've been better.
Is there anything good? 3 words: Eva Mendes naked. That is all.
Just rent out Sin City or any other comic book adaptation.
