Review of The Spectacular Now (2013) by Philip E — 05 May 2014
The Spectacular Now is a refreshing gem of a romance. It seems obvious to me the director is a fan of Cameron Crowe movies because this film reminds me a bit of the classic high school comedy romance Say Anything.
And while The Spectacular Now does not have any scene as iconic as John Cusack holding up a boom box while playing Peter Gabriel's In Your Eyes outside his girlfriend's window it is in fact less cute, with it's own involving drama.
Shailene Woodley shines as the shy, smart and sweet Aimee. She is a bit of a math nerd that has flowered by her senior year of high school unknown to herself into a beautiful person despite not being one of the popular girls.
And Mile Teller as the under achieving party boy who falls in love with her while not seeming to have any future plans, and unresolved past family issues is solid too. The film is light drama, and quite sweet in capturing young love.
