Review of The Spectacular Now (2013) by William G — 18 Jun 2014
While it feels like a silly television sitcom as you watch it, when it all comes together as a whole the film carries a lot of weight and is not one dimensional. I thought that it was able to address the day to day life and interests of a highschooler fairly well through the different character types expressed in its array of its characters. Despite the predictability which it is the writing was the strength in this one...or perhaps it was the compatibility of the main characters. They do come very alive at times. Sutter (Teller) is a realistic character, one I feel I knew back in school, however reminded me of Shia labeouf which was a bit of a distraction.
The cinematography and editing were nothing to get excited about and the music was fairly standard however worked its magic when the time was right. This is better than most of the highschool drama films we see released and I would recommend it to certain circles.
