Review of The Spectacular Now (2013) by Nilufer R — 29 Jun 2014
I may simply be inured of high school movies - y'know the ones I'm talking about - but, this movie did not live up to it's "best of the year" hype. Despite that, it managed to be a really good film that was surprisingly accurate of high school life for some.
Without Miles Teller's amazing acting and portrayal of Sutter, the movie may have crashed and burned, but thankfully he brought to life that guy all of us knows: the one who peaked in high school.
With every word, glance, and slight movement you can tell the underlying madness of Sutter. When he breaks down, and when he experiences those rare few moments of emotional honesty - viewers will remember the car scene, and of course the more upbeat apres-sex scene - he deviates from his terribleness just enough to make him the perfect antihero.
