Review of The Space Between Us (2017) by Zahra I — 02 Feb 2017
I had the tremendous honor, tremendous honor I tell ya to see this piece of film called The Space Between us tonight and I like it! Here's the plot.
When being raised in Mars a young boy, Gardener Elliot, played by Asa Butterfield (Enders Game), comes down to Earth and runs away with a very cynical girl aka Tulsa played by the beautiful and amazing Britt Patterson (Tomorrowland & A Dog's Purpose) whom he's been in an online relationship with for a long time.
I say if you want to have a great night out with your girlfriend and you're not a miserable single ass hole like me and want girls, then go out and see it. You'll sure get some with your girlfriend. I promise you. There'll be tears, smiles, and relief when it's done. However that does not excuse it, this is a bad movie. Matter of fact it's garbage; it's really a Martian ripoff and is an action movie one moment, and then it's a romance, then it's a drama, then it was the Martian. Holy fuck.
Oh also another big issue I had with it is that Gardner changes his dialogue and his entire attitude the moment he is down on Earth. He's a super genius in Mars, then he's teenage Drax the Destroy with reverse Superman powers...since when Superman down on Earth he gains powers, but Gardner....HELL NO HE DOESN'T!!!! Shit!!! Instead he gets a heart two sizes to big. He's the fucking Grinch, Reverse Superman, and a teenage Drax the destroyer!!! Shit makes no sense what so ever!!
Britt Roberts character is annoying as shit too. She tries being a bad ass tough girl and it's so stupid, instead of saying "Oh shit" like she's gonna kick ass you say "Oh shit" with a head ache wishing she can stop shouting. Borderline Jar Jar Binks. The major issue I had was that Tulsa aka Britt Patterson is like this expert at...things...like it wasn't set up at all either you're just there watching her figure out how to do all these things, she's teenage Rey from Force Awakens without the super likeable qualities that Rey actually has. Britt you're an amazing actress, but I want to see you in more competent work that's not Tomorrowland or Space Between Us. Try doing an indie movie if given an opportunity or hell go out and try auditioning for whatever Wes Anderson film is up. It'd hurt to see you have a reputation for being in shitty Sci-Fi films. Please do something good so I can praise your amazingness!!
As a writer, director and producer I would make the movie more like Miracle on 34th Street mixed with Lelo and Stitch with a little Fault in Our Stars. I'd make it more where you're unsure hes really from Mars, and you're not on Mars, then it gets revealed slowly but surely via the twist being that he really is from Mars and that he can die if he lives on Earth for too long. Making it a romantic sci-fi, action adventure drama romance is so stupid, but I still liked it. All I can say is that I wish that this film should've been more focused on being a romance instead of a road trip, action, sci-fi, Martian ripoff, drama and whatever the fuck. It should've cut aleast a whole half hour. All the stuff when we're with Gardner isn't needed what so ever. Matter of fact none of the stuff we see him do pays off.
Okay, may I digress...the film goes down hill once they come down to Earth for a few reasons. One reason is cause they try being smart and scientific, but it's so stupid that you can't keep up. It's not fascinating what so ever. But who says that I have to agree with the popular opinion of ripping it up? Last I checked people want something different. Here it is. I liked it, not loved it, not was amazed. Just liked it.
There's nothing I can really say cause I feel that it'd be a spoiler, but I'll tell you what I did enjoy. I enjoyed the use of clothing and color it worked so perfectly for the beautiful and stunning Britt Roberts who I fan casted to be Mary Jane Watson in the next Spider-Man movie. I swear the use of wardrobe and color was beautifully used. I also loved it that when he starts to get sick that you do feel for him, or I felt for him, not gonna say you cause I am not you. I was seriously hurting for him when it focuses on the best part which is his illness. I enjoyed seeing everyones preformances, one of the few times Asa Butterfield's shitty acting jobs fit his character. For me, maybe cause I'm a 19 year old dude but I liked Britt Patterson the best. Maybe it's cause I see Gary Oldman, Carla Guigno (you beautiful goddess keeping repping us Italian people woo), and Asa Butterfield so often that I'm use to seeing them preform really well, but Britt Roberts stood out the most to me.
Britt is my biggest compliment, but her character is my biggest issue too. Funny huh..
The biggest complement I can give it.
Oh boy the twist is dumb as fuck!!! I know it's stupid, but dammit cause it got to me that I was a little sad when we hear it out. However that is not an excuse for one character in particular. I want to make fun of him so bad. You'll know who it is the moment you see it. Not as cringy as "MARTHA" in Batman v Superman, but almost as cringy.
Yeah it's cliche, theres a very predictable plot point when it's mentioned, the dialogue gets really sappy, but I can't deny that I liked it a lot! I mean I would tear this apart, I'm not cause I liked it.
I give this film a 6.9/10.
