Review of The Song of Bernadette (1943) by Jinfang N — 08 Dec 2007

After seeing several academy award movies, I kind of got a taste of what a good movie is. There are many many things in this movie that make it glamorous and classic. Actually the movie was so good that it troubled me and gave me a hard time to fall asleep. First of all, the story told many philosophies. The behavior and belief of a stupid and sick girl stirred the small village, the impact spread far and above until the emperor and Bishop. Just watching different people's attitudes and the changes in their attitudes toward Bernadette's behavior make you think a lot. Village people didn't believe at the beginning but then was so touched by her deep belief and piety that they become followers. Strong atheist officials wanted to stop it as a commotion. Some other officials want to make a profit from it. The church wanted to avoid trouble and stay away from it at the beginning, and then showed strong support for it. It is a very old movie. You can see peopleâ??s world views and values in the old days. People thought suffering was necessary for them to see God. The guy who loved Bernadette decided to stay single for the rest of his love only because she canâ??t be married.

What makes people believe? Bernadette believed because she saw the lady. She believed even though nobody else can see the lady. Other people became believers because they see the strong belief and piety of Benrnadette, even though they canâ??t see the lady. They doubt it when the miracle they expected did not show and became strong believer when they see other miracles. Even the strong atheist doubt his own values because of so many peopleâ??s belief and zest.

What makes people love? Bernadette loves the lady even though she doesnâ??t know her name, even though the lady didnâ??t do anything good for her. She only suffered from seeing her and following her. Bernadetter knew that the lady was powerful, she should be able to give her happiness and health if she wants, but she didnâ??t do that. Yet she still loved her until death. Why? The reason is the lady was beautiful. How sad it is! The jealous non loved God, and she would like to suffer to see God. She got so envious that Bernedette see God and she didnâ??t. I do believe that is true for many people, even today. I just want to ask why? Why it is so important to see God? Why it is so important to love God? God has his own plan, your suffering may be part of Godâ?? s plan. People who doesnâ??t even know god may be blessed. People who pray all day may be suffering for the whole life.
