Review of The Soloist (2009) by Gail B — 31 Aug 2014
I loved this movie and cried many times through it. The story honestly shows how a person may seem perfectly normal growing up, but be overtaken by a mental illness, and that many times, there is nothing you can do.
It is true that many of us want to help, want to fix everyone, but as Robert Downey Jr. found out, what really helps those who can't fix their problems is to love them. Imagine not being loved, being feared, and never having people accept you because of who you are.
How many people could walk into this situation and really help. Having a better life often means just being accepted and loved as you are. This movie is the first I have seen to portray this situation so accurately.
It was moving. Many seem to think the movie lacked focus. Having dealt with people in similar situations, I can tell you that this lack of focus is exactly what you live through in trying to come to terms with the situation.
You don't know what to do, you don't know how to feel, the unexpected always happens. All should see this.
