Review of The Soloist (2009) by Annegret M — 24 Apr 2010
A very well-played film that shows the frustrations involved in trying to help the mentally ill. But should we consider Ayers "mentally ill"? He copes with the world the way he knows, just as we sane people do.
The theme of friendship runs strongly through the film. And yet, the strongest theme -- the heartbeat of the film -- is that of grace. Each of us are given unique gifts from god, and we all struggle through our lives to understand what it is we are supposed to do with them. For Ayers the gift was music, for Lopez, it was words.
These "gifts" are within you to transform others, and in so doing, you become transformed.
