Review of The Soloist (2009) by Alison W — 07 Jul 2010
Despite a superb cast, assured direction and an intriguing premise, this drama fails dismally in capturing its central figure and the drama surrounding him - a musical prodigy ravaged by mental illness living on the streets of L.
A. A rather ragged, unfocused and sometimes confused script tends to spend time with unnecessary sermonizing in terms of its action story, and in doing so sacrifices its chances to build a subtle, moving relationship between the cellist Anthony Ayers, played with gusto by Jamie Foxx and journalist Steve Lopez, played with a faint sense of familiarity by a solid Robert Downey Jr.
Though director Joe Wright ("Atonement") keeps the action true and has control of bringing the script to life, the story fails to inspire or illuminate.
