Review of The Soloist (2009) by Carly S — 03 Feb 2011
True-life dramas are right up my street. It seemed from the trailers that this would be an inspirational tale about overcoming stereotypes and giving second chances. I was very surprised that the cinematic slant did not prevent the story from being real.
The ending was not all tied up in a magical Hollywood bow, but it didn't leave you feeling depressed either. Jamie Foxx was very convincing as someone suffering from mental illness and I enjoyed Robert Downey Jr's performance as well.
I don't think this is an award-winning film by any means, but it made the point that people cannot be forced to change or be forced to fit into categories. You cannot help someone who doesn't want to help themselves, and sometimes kindness is a matter of opinion.
