Review of The Soloist (2009) by Taylor W — 26 Jan 2012
Somewhat old fashioned but beautifully realized, âThe Soloistâ? takes a sentimental true story of a mentally instable homeless musician (Jamie Foxx) delivered to fame by an unlikely hero (Robert Downey Jr.) and makes high quality drama out of it.
Director Joe Wright has a decent track record, and a certain professional confidence is apparent here. âThe Soloistâ? is made with steady style and vision, resulting in a mixture of traditional storytelling and a pinch of artistic experimentation. Still the whole feels unique and not too calculated, especially as this film truly is about something. It is at its best when it explores themes of poverty, homelessness and mental illness in modern society, begging for intervention underneath all the drama.
