Im not sure this deserves the terrible reviews its getting... I certainly didnt think it was terrible. It was mildly disappointing but far from terrible. There was a great cast and all did a great job.
It was just quite predictable and no, snowmen arent that visually scary it seems no matter what you do. I think people (including me) just had very high expectations for it given the interesting premise and the great cast.
It didnt meet these but it was passably entertaining.
