Review of The Snake Pit (1948) by Katie M — 17 Feb 2010
A truly harrowing, disturbing, and honest look into mental illness and the archaic and sometimes brutal psychiatric system of the 1940's. Olivia de Havilland is brilliant and utterly UN-glamorous here, which is wholly refreshing, but I thought the reasons behind her illness were sort of weak -- definitely not worth all the build-up and evasiveness.
But watching her struggle with her own shattered mind is completely transfixing. I also thought the dance scene at the end was a little ridiculous, but I guess that sort of thing actually happened - go figure! In any case, highly recommended!!
