Review of The Smurfs 2 (2013) by David B — 07 Apr 2014

Having actually liked the first movie, I was hoping it'd clear minor faults with the first film and fill in the gaps with this sequel but no. Sure, it's a movie for kids but should also be aimed at the fans as well but you know your're going to get it bad when The Smurfs 2 reaches an apex, of sorts, when Brendan Gleeson plummets from the sky into a dumpster, entirely naked and covered in Smurfs and some other slightly embarrassing scenes.

The idea of the Smurfs being transported to our world was just a rehash of the first film but focuses more on Smurfette and instead of the smurfs from the first film (Brainy etc etc) they introduced new ones but didn't really spice any comic moments unlike the first film.

The sequel also tries to hard to be better but fails with a witless script, action and comedy. It would be too much to say that there's a good movie somewhere inside Smurfs 2 looking to get out. But it wouldn't be too much to say that sometimes, the movie we do have tries harder than we might expect.

The smurf animation is great though and Hank Azaria is again perfect as Gargamel, otherwise, this is another film added to pointless sequels that shouldn't have been made.
