Review of The Skin I Live In (2011) by David S — 19 Oct 2012
After watching 'The Curse of Frankenstein' I was keen to see another mad scientist film and they don't get madder than Banderas in this film! The mystery of the film is revealed just over halfway through and when you realise what he has actually done the viewer is disgusted and amazed.
The whole thing should be completely ridiculous but somehow Almodovar makes it work and you have to admire him for coming up with such a bizarre idea. Anaya is stunning as Vera but your perception of her is dramatically altered when you realise the extent of Banderas' madness.
He in turn is excellent as the mad doctor and delivers one of his best ever performances. In the end the film can't really live up to the craziness of the central idea and the ending feels rushed and a little uncertain but I challenge you to watch the film and try to guess the twist.
I sincerely doubt if you can!
