Review of The Skin I Live In (2011) by Geoff T — 24 Mar 2012
What a mindfuck this was. I can't really tell you what it's about, because the less you know the better, and it's one of those films where once you know the whole story, it's difficult to explain in a way that won't spoil the excitement.
This movie balances a lot of genres: medical drama, romance, dealing with past trauma, gender issues, debates in the scientific community, all with a subtext of psychological and sexual motivation. It manages to juggle them efficiently, not lending too much screen time to any one aspect, which is worthy of respect on its own, but the fact that it's riveting is an entirely different achievement.
It's a hard film to recommend because telling you to go watch this means you'll be very unsettled for two hours, but it's worth your discomfort.
