Review of The Skeleton Twins (2014) by Ian L — 15 Dec 2014
A bitter dramedy that is elevated by the impressive talents of the SNL-alums Kristen Wiig and especially, Bill Hader who gives a stellar performance and his best dramatically. The story is strong, and a bit depressing right out the gates, but it's a melancholic set-up that I found poetic and set the tone for the film instantly.
These are not happy characters and all of their conversations will have you hooked as they get more and more off their chests and you understand their points of view. Now, it's not all sad and there are a number of laugh-out-loud moments (like a fantastic lip-syncing scene) because the chemistry between Wiig and Hader is so fantastic you'd believe they were actually related.
It's a charming indie film that deserves the praise it's been getting, but be prepared for a sad tale of two lost souls, because the film pulls no punches.
