Review of The Skeleton Twins (2014) by Lyn — 04 Jan 2015
Wiig and Hader have great sibling chemistry in this film that shows a brother and sister alternately irritating, rescuing, angering, and amusing each other. Wiig's character is somewhat different from the methodical, repressed woman she played in "Hateship/Loveship," but she plays them pretty much the same.
Hader seems to get every nuance of his tormented, sardonic character perfect. You go with the story because you really want these people to work things out and "be there" for each other. The film says several things about suicide, not all of which you'll agree with if you know much about the subject.
The siblings illustrate the haunting effects of family dysfunction as people grow up ... but also imply that suicidal tendencies can be kind of whimsical and funny and there will always be someone there to provide an escape from the darkness.
Not really true.
