Review of The Sixth Sense (1999) by Micheline S — 05 Jun 2013
Despite my hatred for Shyamalan's recent work - especially The Last Airbender - I have incredible respect for the direction and quality of this film. The Sixth Sense has the look and feel of a classic, bolstered by outstanding performances by its leads and a fantastic script.
As the youngest star in the film, Haley Joel Osment outperforms Bruce Willis and Toni Collete by a long shot; quiet (for the most part) as he is, his whispers and the shear fear in his eyes sent chills down my spine.
Bruce Willis and Toni Collette are also great, but it's hard to take your eyes off Osment because the kind of talent he holds is so hard to come by these days. Shyamalan's excellent script and attention to detail, though, is what makes the film so good, and the twist at the end is the cherry on top of this masterpiece of film making.
Part horror, part mystery, and part thriller, The Sixth Sense is Shyamalan's best film to date and a ghost story for the ages.
