Review of The Signal (2014) by Nathan M — 29 Jun 2014
I really like how determined writer/director William Eubank was to create a sci-fi film that brought something new to the table, but no matter how original it feels, it's not strong enough to be match it's originality in quality. Eubank is a phenomenal visual artist, and knows how to tell the story without having to spell it out for you. Most of the special effects and set pieces are so good that you are captivated by what's happening on screen. However, the film could have used a little more thought behind its premise or a little more explanation.
I appreciated the fact that Eubank allowed us to get to know these characters before he put them in danger. It's something even some of the most talented directors don't do. Before the sci-fi elements come in to play, you might be thinking this is just another coming of age film. In fact, there's a pretty noticeable message throughout the film comparing the sci fi elements to growing up and growing apart. All of that works pretty well.
Unfortunately the film may be too enigmatic for its own good. A film like 2001: A Space Odyssey that is equally enigmatic has more going for it to reward multiple viewings. The Signal lacks some of the same qualities, and, therefore, may be passed over as too abstract or incomplete. I think there's more going on than that, but Eubank and his cast seem too inexperienced to really be able to convince an audience of this.
The film is not for everyone, but if you're a hardcore sci fi fan, you'll be interested in The Signal. For me, it's pretty average, but at least it's trying. I can appreciate that.
