Review of The Shop Around the Corner (1940) by Brett B — 07 Dec 2011
A rather lovely, high-quality Studio System-era romantic comedy. Lubitsch displays a total mastery of the film's tone, and it is an enjoyable movie from start to finish. The plot is at least moderately unique (or it was at the time, anyway), and the relationship between Stewart and Sullavan is delicately handled.
As good as the two leads are, the supporting cast is even better, with several distinct and memorable personalities filling out the edges of the story.
