Review of The Shipping News (2001) by Craig F — 22 Jun 2007
An adaption of Annie Proulx' Pulitzer Prize-winning book about a man who moves back to his native Newfoundland after his lover's sudden death. The movie is a masterwork of style--the screen is always dark, with grays, blacks and whites residing predominantly.
The storytelling seems somewhat simple, and the dialogue and situations seem to scream, "Gee golly, ain't we cute." The acting is top-notch (though the Newfoundland accents seemed somewhat distracting at first, for their comical nature).
A decent film, whose style rises slightly above its story.
