Review of The Shipping News (2001) by Sophie G — 04 Sep 2010
This is a 'you like it or you don't' film about a man in despair having to rebuild his life in a place where his ancestors are infamous. Underneath Quoyle's issues, his family ghosts and the "premonitions" is a message on how broken men can mend.
There's also an occasion of witty dialogue, the building of trust and friendship, and the message that some relationships can weather any storm. If you look past the bits you have to fast forward, it's an alright flick for a rainy day.
