Sometimes I love a movie despite a consensus of bad reviews from reviewers and movie-goers. I often love the movie for my own reasons even though I can easily see the complaints people put forth.
But for the Shipping News, I have literally no understanding why it wasn't nominated for the Oscars, and how people regard it as a failure. My second favorite movie of all time.
