Review of The Shining (1980) by Alessandra J — 18 Dec 2013
This film is different from the book, Shelly Duvall's character in the book has the depth and background knowledge and personality to make her a likeable character, I would say the most likeable character in the book.
On screen she translates as an annoying screaming woman who you can understand why she gets on her husbands nerves. Jack Nicholsan is brilliant as Jack, who is really scary and the little kid is played very well and incredibly creepy.
As excellent as this film is, I think that the book is better and I can understand why Stephen King was not a fan of the film, I think it is probably because the characters are not quite portrayed the same as they are in the book.
What I like that is different in the film is, I enjoy the visions the kid has of the two girls, I think it adds to the whole terror theme well. I also think that the gushing of blood from the walls worked very well.
This is a brilliant film, however if you are the sort of person that hates films that are quite different from the book, this film will not be for you.
