Review of The Shining (1980) by George B — 01 Jun 2014
"REDRUM... REDRUM... REDRUM"... yeah, if you have a line like that, you already know the film is going to be at least interesting if not amazing. Stanley Kubrick's The Shining is amazing.
The filming and the story in total was brilliant. This film a loose adaptation of Stephen King's novel but it was so good as a film on its own. It was the little things the actors did that made this film its own psychological hell but wonderful experience.
From that look Jack Nicholson gives to Shelley Duvall's eyes and scream when she is being terrorized, it eventually gets to you. The other part that gets you is the hell you get from being isolated for so long.
The hallucinations and going to the brink of insanity... wow. It is a cinematic achievement and I don't think anyone can do a remake that would be at least on par to this elite level. My only gripe is that the psychological torture is relentless and it gets to you as an audience member but that's a good thing.
The film is horror but not your typical horror. It's very human and at the same time surreal. The making of the film is amazing as well and that should checked out. I love this movie and recommend it to everyone, unless you have a delicate mind (this film would mess you up).
