Review of The Shining (1980) by Simon H — 15 Jul 2014
Whilst not critically acclaimed on its release, The Shining has all the right ingredients to make a entertaining and suspense filled horror film. The script is well written. It is not too basic, yet doesn't give you too much to think about. The scares are played well and are not exaggerated too much.
Jack Nicholson is perfect in the role as the lead. His mad, over the top performance is exactly what is needed. The other two featured stars do a good job. At times Shelley Duvall seems out of place alongside Nicholson, but when it comes to being scared, she throws out everything she's got. She really does come across terrified and full of fear.
Technically, there are a good choice of camera shots found in the Shining and a simple but effective score. The film gives you a satisfying and interesting twist at the end which wraps a backstory up yet keeps it open for discussion.
Not many horror films these days are very effective in scares, but the Shining still manages to do just that over 30 years later.
