Although Shelley Duvall may have been miscast in this film, and that it is very far from the Stephen King novel of the same name, it allows us to view Jack slipping into madness, just close enough to observe, but not to want to route for him.
The performance of Joe Turkel as Lloyd was especially unnerving.
